2011年2月アメリカ西海岸旅行記（その6）―サンフランシスコのケーブルカー― [アメリカ西海岸]
サンフランシスコに来たということで、まずはケーブルカーに乗って市内観光に。乗り場前のチケット売り場で3日間有効のMUNIパスポート（US$26)を購入します。
ホテル近くの乗り場はPowell-Hyde Line（パウエル―ハイド線）及びPowell-Mason Line（パウエル―メイソン線）の発着地点で、転車台での回転が行われています。
まず、車両を転車台に乗せて
人力で台を回転させて、車両の方向を転換させます。
ケーブルカーの車内。始発から観光客でいっぱいです。途中から乗る場合、ステップに立ち、手すりにつかまって乗ることになります。
ケーブルカーに乗ること約10分で到着したのが、ケーブルカー博物館。入場無料で気軽に入ることができます。
ここでサンフランシスコ市内を走る3つのケーブルカー路線を制御しており、ケーブルをまわしている巨大な車輪がひっきりなしに回転しています。
館内には歴代の車両も展示されています。サンフランシスコにケーブルカーが導入されたのは1873年のこと。
1906年のサンフランシスコ大地震とその後の大火事により、ケーブルカー路線は壊滅的な被害を受けたようです。そのときの資料も展示されています。
その後、路線数、車両数とも削減されたものの、現在も市民の足として、観光資源として親しまれています。
